How to Locate the Engine Serial Number on a Mercury Engine

Learn how to find the Engine Serial Number (ESN) on a Mercury engine.

How-To

Your marine engine serial number is a very important piece of information you’ll need whenever you arrange for service or purchase parts.

In this Mercury Quick Tip, we’ll show you how to find the engine data tag where the engine serial (ESN) is located so you can reference it any time you need it. For engines of 8hp and higher, the serial number tag can be found on the right (starboard) side – halfway down the transom assembly, just below the engine’s powerhead. For engines 6hp and lower, the tag with the serial number is located on the top of the swivel bracket. Depending on the model, you may need to tilt the engine up and/or turn the steering wheel to the left to get a good view.

It’s also a good idea to keep a photo of the data tag on your cell phone in case the tag is damaged or if you need the ESN while not with your boat.
